Committee meeting October 26th, In-person support is neededl!

Voice your anti-declaw opinion now!

The City Operations & Neighborhood Services Committee meeting is on Monday, October 26, starts at 10:30am.
City Hall, Committee Room 263, Members: Bevan Dufty, Chris Daly, Sean Elsbernd
Clerk: Victor Young 415-554-7723

It is crucial that residents against declawing come to this meeting to show the Board members your opinions on the matter. If you can’t make it, please send emails to the supervisors listed below.

Unfortunately, local veterinarians are very vocally against this ban because they don’t want to be legislated so this is who the Board is hearing from. Word has it that they are swamping the Board of Supervisors with letters against a ban. This means the cat advocates of this city need to meow even louder against declawing.

There will be an info table at Pet Pride event in Golden Gate park this Sunday 10/25 gathering signatures supporting the ban on declawing.

Send short, courteous and to-the-point emails to ALL of the supervisors listed. Send an email directly to your supervisor and then copy (CC) the rest of the supervisors on the email. Also please blind copy (BCC) a copy of the email to L-Danyielle at:
harris.rose@att.net as she is going to make hard copies to hand to the Board in person.

This goes before the above Committee first.

THEN the next day, Tuesday 10/27/09 it will be before the SF Board of Supervisors where it will either pass or fail.

Here is a list of the Supervisors:

Michela.Alioto-Pier@sfgov.org,
John.Avalos@sfgov.org,
David.Campos@sfgov.org,
David.Chiu@sfgov.org,
Carmen.Chu@sfgov.org,
Chris.Daly@sfgov.org,
Bevan.Dufty@sfgov.org,
Sean.Elsbernd@sfgov.org,
Eric.L.Mar@sfgov.org,
Sophie.Maxwell@sfgov.org,
Ross.Mirkarimi@sfgov.org,

If you can’t make it to the hearing on the 26th please take the time to email the supervisors. Vocal opposition to declawing is crucial! If they don’t hear from us they will vote in favor of keeping this horribly cruel procedure legal.

Call to Action! Ban Declawing in San Francisco.

Call to Action! Ban Declawing in San Francisco.

We are working hard to gather signatures for the San Francisco City Council’s proposed ban on declawing cats. The SF Board of Supervisors committee is going to discuss and vote on the ban on October 26th at 10:30 am at City Hal. On the 27th the full Board will vote. If it passes it will go to the mayor who has 10 days to sign it, veto it or let it go into effect without his signature. Many fellow cat lovers may already know how cruel this practice is, but here are some links that can put this surgical procedure in perspective for those who are not aware.

Click here to read about the procedure.

Here is a very good information page about the proposed ban. (There is a link to contact SF City Council Members is at the bottom of that page).

Santa Monica Close to Banning Declawing!

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — In a 5-1 vote, Santa Monica City Council passed a motion Tuesday to draft an ordinance that restricts the practice of amputating the toes of animals, also known as “de-clawing.” The motion was brought by City Council Members Kevin McKeown and Gleam Davis, who requested that the ordinance, if passed, be enacted prior to December 31, 2009, after which date local jurisdictions’ authority in such matters will be usurped by SB 762, a pending state law limiting cities’ rights to ban medical procedures they deem inhumane.
